Department of Microbiology

Overview

The Department of Microbiology at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College is committed to excellence in medical education, clinical diagnostics and research. Microbiology is a cornerstone medical discipline dedicated to understanding microorganisms and their role in human health and disease. The department integrates academic rigor with practical laboratory experience to produce competent clinicians, diagnosticians, and researchers prepared to meet contemporary infectious disease challenges.

Vision & Mission

Vision: To be a leading academic and diagnostic microbiology department recognized for high-quality education, cutting-edge laboratory services, and impactful research that advances public health and patient care.

Mission: Deliver evidence-based teaching aligned with the latest medical curriculum and competencies required for MBBS and postgraduate training.

Provide state-of-the-art clinical microbiology services to support diagnosis, treatment, and infection control in hospital and community settings.

Promote research and innovation in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular diagnostics.

Academic Programmes & Training

The department plays a crucial role in medical education and training: Undergraduate (MBBS) Teaching: Structured theoretical and practical sessions covering bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology, and clinical microbiology. Skill Enhancement: Seminars, tutorials, laboratory demonstrations, group discussions, case presentations, and journal clubs to foster critical thinking and clinical correlation. The emphasis is on competency-based learning that develops critical analytical and practical laboratory skills.

Laboratory Services & Diagnostics:

The department provides a comprehensive range of clinical microbiology diagnostic services, including:

Bacteriology:

Isolation, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacterial pathogens.

Virology & Molecular Diagnostics:

Viral Detection and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory functions as a specialized diagnostic and academic unit under the Department of Microbiology, providing timely, accurate and clinically relevant molecular testing for viral infections. The laboratory supports patient care, outbreak preparedness, infection control activities, teaching and research, in alignment with national diagnostic and biosafety standard

Serology & Immunology:

Detection of antibodies/antigens for infectious and immune-mediated diseases

Mycology & Parasitology:

Identification and sensitivity testing of fungal and parasitic pathogens.

Mycobacteriology:

TB culture and Drug Susceptibility testing (TB C&DST) laboratory is established under the NTEP program and in the supervision of Central TB Division (CTD), Ministry of Health & family welfare, GOI. The laboratory is equipped with advanced and semi-automated modern equipments which support tuberculosis diagnosis and drug resistance surveillance. The lab is certified by the CTD, New Delhi and caterer TB diagnostics services to 7 districts of Bundelkhand region.

These services support patient care, infection prevention strategies, and outbreak investigation across hospital units. The diagnostic labs follow stringent quality assurance and biosafety protocols, with state-of-the-art equipment and automation

HIV Testing Laboratory:

The Department has a well-established NACO/UPSACS-supported laboratory programme. The HIV Testing Laboratory was established in 2002, followed by the State Reference Laboratory in 2010. The HIV Testing Laboratory provides HIV testing and counseling services and has been accredited by NABL (ISO 15189) since February 2019. The State Reference Laboratory functions as a mentoring and supervisory centre for 19 laboratories across five districts. Among these, 14 laboratories have been recognized as Centres of Excellence (Five-Star rating as per NACO guidelines), while five laboratories are NABL accredited.

To strengthen logistics and supply chain management, a walk-in cooler was established in 2021 for the storage and distribution of HIV diagnostic kits and antiretroviral drugs, catering to 19 laboratories, five NGOs, and five DSRC laboratories across the five districts.

Public Health Initiative

The department actively contributes to institutional and community health through various National Health Programmes like NTEP, NVHCP, NACO, NVBDCP, IDSP.

  • Quality & Safety: Implementation of best practices in laboratory quality control and infection prevention.
