Department of Respiratory Medicine (TB & Chest)
The Department of Respiratory Medicine (TB & Chest) is a well-established clinical and academic unit providing comprehensive care to patients with a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases. As of date, the department has three faculty members and runs a recognized M.D. (Respiratory Medicine) postgraduate training program, with five sanctioned M.D. student positions.
The department has a total of 56 inpatient beds, offering specialized care to patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), and other acute and chronic respiratory disorders.
A wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are routinely performed, including pulmonary function testing, ultrasound-guided thoracentesis, intercostal drainage, fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), lung biopsy, and other advanced interventions. The department is equipped with an advanced flexible video bronchoscope, and procedures such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushing, and transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) are regularly conducted.
The department functions as a Nodal Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB) Centre, providing comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis. A separate designated DOTS-Plus ward is available for the management of DR-TB cases. Additionally, the department is linked to King George’s Medical University as a Mini Hub for ECHO sessions under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP).
Furthermore, an upcoming six-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is currently under construction as part of the Smart TB Centre. This facility will significantly enhance critical care services and strengthen advanced respiratory and intensive care management within the department.
